Somebody mad at Gap?
Jill pointed out to me this morning that the Gap family of websites (The Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy) no longer allow users to connect using Safari, the default browser in Mac OS X. Instead of loading the site, the browser instead goes through a never-ending string of redirects. How is this good for customers?
Of course there are workarounds, like changing the user-agent in Safari or using an ‘approved’ browser to access the site. The question is, however, why lock out several percent of possible customers from your site?
Could just be an oversight. Or have something to do with Millard Drexler, the former CEO of Gap who took a board seat with Apple and later left Gap for J.Crew. (J.Crew’s website loads fine in Safari… coincidence?) Or perhaps Steve Jobs didn’t play nice while on Gap’s board, a position he held until January 2002.
Either way, I think you’ll see their sites ‘fixed’ to allow Safari customers in short order.
