I was reading an interesting article at the Chicago Tribune today. It is definitely one I can relate to: Do you speak 'Caddyshack'? -- In real life, many guys like to quote reel life
I guess this article made me laugh twice. The first was the irony that I'm not alone in this affliction. A large (but shrinking) part of my persona is based on television and movie quotes -- I can obviously relate to the author and those he interviewed! I internalize these regurgitated quotes more than I used to, but frequently I've got Jerry Seinfeld live-and-in-person (in my head) saying, "That's a shame..." with plenty of sarcasm when someone is telling a self-inflicted, but all-too-sad personal anecdote. And that, in itself, truly is a shame.
The second was when the author pointed out that someone with this affliction (I'll call it an ability) would be very well suited to work at a Blockbuster video rental store. <pause> I just started working part-time at Blockbuster yesterday. Do I feel qualified to work there? Yes. Because of my ability? I guess it doesn't hurt!
Movies are a fun distraction from the rigors of everyday life. And I like to take the distraction along with me for the ride.
Click below for a list of some of the "reel" quotes from the article.
"You're on a gravy train with biscuit wheels!" --Bill Murray as Ernie McCracken in "Kingpin"
"Check my pulse on this question, Jack, do I think you're a psycho? Yes!" --Ben Stiller as Greg Focker in "Meet the Parents"
"Yes, Satan? Oh, I'm sorry, sir. You sounded like someone else." --Jim Carey as Ace Ventura in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"
"I did not achieve this position in life by having some snot-nosed punk leave my cheese out in the wind." --Jeffrey Jones as Ed Rooney in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
"I just don't get it! She seems totally uninterested in me, despite my smothering obsessiveness." --Chris Elliot as Nathanial Mayweather in "Cabin Boy"
"Tell the cook this is low-grade dog food. The steak still has marks where the jockey was hitting it." --Rodney Dangerfield as Al Czernik in "Caddyshack"
Here is one of my favorite quotes:
"Success is the ability to meet failure after failure without loss of enthusiasm."
--Winston Churchill
