Ezekiel 25:17

B000068DBC.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgSomething that I think is interesting is the way in which Bible verses are used in media. I see and read verses in a variety of places, and it is about time I started recording some of them.

This verse, Ezekiel 25:17, was painfully glorified in the movie Pulp Fiction. There is more to it, but for me this first portion speaks volumes.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the Valley of Darkness; for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children.

UPDATE: I've since come to realize that this isn't a direct quote from the Bible, but rather a conglomeration of verses. Best forget I ever said anything about it...

I would NOT encourage anyone to watch this movie. I had to turn it off part way through because of the violent content and foul language. Just because a movie refers to the Bible doesn't make it good to watch. (did it even refer to the Bible? I can't remember...) Perhaps there was a "good ending", but does the end justify filling our minds with the "bad" first?

Kevin, your amazon.com link seems to encourage people to buy this movie. Is that really what you are intending??

Kevin, I think I understand where you're coming from on this one. One of the great things about you is your insatiable hunger for learning. Learning isn't always comfortable and it doesn't always come in forms that are compatible with our values. If we turned a blind eye to everything we don't agree with, how would we ever learn anything or be able to form valid opinions and arguments for our values? I understand that the basis for our values comes from the Bible, but we also need to have a grasp on the current state of our culture so that we can function in society, as well as teach our children how to function appropriately.

Would I want my children to watch Pulp Fiction? No. But as a well-rounded, level-headed adult, I could view that movie and know that I am not going to be influenced to go out and imitate the actions that I saw.

Being familiar with what the Bible does say, will greatly help you to identify when it's correctly quoted, yet taken out of context, or to immediately identify false quotes. Try a group study. It can be very enlightening AND Fun. Or even check out an ALPHA coarse (http://alphausa.org) for more "Questions of Life" answers.

The hit man character Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) quotes "Ezekiel 25:17" in but in fact he has greatly altered the Bible passage. The actual passage says:

Ezek 25:17 I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD , when I take vengeance on them.' "

[Note: This was God's response to the Philistines, because they were so spitefully vengeful, that Israel had been devastated, and God's temple was defaced and the Israelites were taken into captivity. God was responding to the Philistines, (and Edom). God's not happy even when Pharaoh's men are killed in The Exodus. Miriam trys to sing and be joyful, but God tells her otherwise]

Here's what the character Jules says, adding bits from the 23rd Psalm and his own "rhetoric" of a murderer:

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the Valley of Darkness; for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children.

As for some comments, I can say our current social movement is covered under the this descriptive term for [values]: "Defining deviancy down". What was once totally un-acceptable, now is ...OK.

In our nation of entertainment and live in the Box, watching TV, Movies, playing video games and living on the internet, reality becomes what you see. Some are never taught that there is a better way, or that God really wants better for you/me/us/them. I enjoyed the movie, from a Worldly point of view. But consider, if you don't want your children (kids) to see it. Consider.. Why? If it's not OK for them, what is your rationale to make it OK for you/us/them? Sooner or later it's OK to glorify drug use? When will you "Want" your children to "use" heroin? To be able to drive around in they're (your children's) 64 Cherry Chevy Conv. after mainlining heroin? If you'd use it, you'd know that there isn't much chance of that. I think Lynyrd Skynyrd said it best, "Don't mess with the needle, or the spoon".

Thirty days, Lord, and thirty nights
I'm coming home on an airplane flight
Mama waiting at the ticket line
Tell me son, why do you stand there cryin'?
It was the needle and the spoon
And a trip to the moon
Took me away
Took me away
I've been feeling so sick inside
Got to get better, Lord, before I die
Some doctors couldn't help my head, they said
You'd better quit, son, before you're dead
Quit the needle, quit the spoon
Quit the trip to the moon
They gonna take you away
Lord, they gonna take you away
It was the needle and the spoon
I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool
But then again, Lord, I've seen a lot of fools
I hope you people, Lord, can hear what I say
You'll have your chance to hit it some day
Don't mess with a needle or a spoon
Or a trip to the moon
They'll take you away
Lord, their gonna bury you boy
Don't mess with the needle
Now I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
